Reduce Weight Focus with Thought Substitution

Posted: December 14, 2022

Congratulations to Tara Blake, RD for extending her certification for a total of nine years. She shared that Craving Change has been a ‘game changer’ in her practice. Here are her comments on the use of ‘Thought Substitution’, a cognitive restructuring technique from our ABC’s of CBT Booklet:

“I use this technique to challenge some individuals’ thoughts re: their weight. They may believe or have been told by other health professionals that they need to lose weight or should weight X amount. When they don’t lose the weight, they often feel badly about themselves. I try to shift their thinking to modifiable behavior change, focusing rather on finding a sustainable healthy eating pattern and body movement that feels good to them, bringing in messages of the HAES approach.”

“It is so rewarding to help facilitate someone’s relationship with food and allow them to honor and respect all of the roles that food has in our lives!”
